Structured cabling work is only as good as the standard it’s held to.

Cable Categories and What They Actually Buy You

Not every job needs the same cable, and choosing the right category matters more than most people realize.

  • Cat5e supports up to 1 Gbps and remains a reasonable choice for lower-demand runs.
  • Cat6 supports 10 Gbps over shorter distances, making it a common choice for modern office networks.
  • Cat6A supports 10 Gbps over the full 100-meter channel length defined by TIA/EIA-568.2-D, and is the better choice for future-proofing.
  • Shielded (STP) cable is used where electromagnetic interference is a concern; unshielded (UTP) is standard elsewhere.

Termination, Testing & Certification

A cable run isn’t finished until it’s tested and proven to perform.

  • Termination follows TIA/EIA-568 pinout and termination practices at patch panels and jacks.
  • Every run is certified with a cable tester that checks wiremap, length, attenuation, and crosstalk.
  • Test results are documented and handed over as part of the project record, not just verbally confirmed.

Pathways, Plenum & Code Compliance

Where and how cable is run matters as much as the cable itself.

  • Plenum-rated cable is used in air-handling spaces where required by code.
  • Cable pathways use proper J-hooks and support spacing rather than resting on ceiling tiles or other infrastructure.
  • Bend radius limits and separation from power conductors are respected to protect performance.
