Class 2 Circuits, Explained

Most low-voltage security and data cabling falls under a specific, well-defined code category.

  • The National Electrical Code and Canadian Electrical Code both define Class 2 circuits as power-limited circuits, generally up to 100VA at 60V DC or less.
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE), as defined under IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at, fits within this Class 2 framework for standard-power applications.
  • This classification is part of why most data and low-voltage security cabling is treated differently from line-voltage electrical work under the applicable code.
  • Higher-power PoE applications are evaluated on their own merits, since power levels can approach the boundaries of the Class 2 definition.
