Sensor monitoring gets planned very differently depending on whether it’s going into a building that’s already operating versus one still under construction. The constraints, timing, and even the hardware choices genuinely differ. Here’s what actually changes between the two scenarios.
Retrofit: Working Around What Already Exists
Connectivity is a bigger question mark. An existing building’s WiFi coverage is a known, fixed quantity, sometimes strong throughout, sometimes with real dead zones in exactly the mechanical rooms and basements where monitoring matters most. This is where cellular-connected sensors, independent of the building’s own network, genuinely matter more for a retrofit than a new build with WiFi planned in from the start.
Installation has to work around active operations. A retrofit deployment usually happens while the building is still in use, meaning installation gets scheduled around occupied hours, active mechanical systems, and minimal disruption, rather than having free access during a construction phase.
You’re working with the electrical and structural reality that exists, not designing around it. Sensor placement sometimes has to compromise slightly based on existing conduit runs, accessible mounting points, or where power is actually available, rather than the theoretically ideal location.

New Construction: Planning It in From the Start
Wiring and conduit can be planned for sensors specifically, rather than working around what already exists. This opens up wired sensor options in some cases where a retrofit would default to wireless out of necessity.
Placement can be genuinely optimal, since sensor locations get decided during the design phase, not compromised against existing infrastructure.
There’s no incident history yet to prioritize against, which means initial sensor placement leans more heavily on general best practice, the same high-value categories, mechanical rooms, cold storage, server closets, discussed in our monitoring checklist, rather than site-specific past failures.
Installation coordinates with other trades already on site, electrical, low-voltage, and general contractors, rather than being a standalone visit scheduled independently.
The Practical Bottom Line
Neither scenario is harder in an absolute sense, they’re just different projects with different constraints. A retrofit deployment should lean toward cellular connectivity and prioritize based on real incident history. A new construction deployment has more flexibility in hardware choice and placement, but less specific history to work from, making general best practice the right starting point.
